12 point star - mark 2

I decided to crochet another 12 point star blankie but using more vibrant colours this time. I'm not too far into it yet but here's how it's looking so far:

The colours aren't showing up too well so here it is in the only shaft of sunlight I could find in the house this evening. It shows the colours a wee bit better. That's a purple and a salmon pink!

12 point star - all done

I've decided that the 12 point star blankie I was making is finished. It was getting a bit boring as it was taking me more than an hour to get around it - or should that be "astar" it? :oD

Here it is - it's not lying very square - star?? - but you get the idea.

It measures about 52" across so that's big enough to sit around shoulders or over knees. I'm really pleased with the way it has turned out. Good job, me! :oD

fabrics

Last week we went on a trip along the coast and one of the stops on the way home was Very Crafty in Lower Largo. Whilst Douglas went to take photos of the village, Joanna and I went into Very Crafty to spend some money.

Here's what I got:

A couple of panels:

A couple of scrap packets which just contain, well, scraps!

I was really pleased with all the fabrics in the scrap packets but these two are my absolute favourites:

Some fat quarters - all except the rainbow ones came out of the reduced box. I love a bargain or 8!

And some close ups of some of them:

And this fabric was one I picked up in the bargain bin of one of my local curtain fabric shops. I don't know what I'll do with it but I'll think of something.

from the sewing room window - 24 May

I managed to open the sewing room window to take the photo today although it's still very blustery out there. In fact, as I was taking the photo, the wind made the sewing room door slam shut!

Anyway, here it is:

You'll see Douglas up a step-ladder trying to make sure the hut roof stays put - a bit flew off into our neighbour's garden yesterday. Thankfully, nobody was around to get hit by it! I did yell at him out of the window to be very careful up there - as I said, it was still really windy.

You might be able to see just how windy if you look at the trees at the top right of the photo - there's a definite lean to the right going on there!

very, very windy

I usually take photos out of the sewing room window on a Monday - or on a Tuesday if I forget!! - but there was no way I was opening that window today.

Why? Because it's been blowing a gale here today. Scotland has been badly hit by gale force winds. 100 mile an hour gusts were recorded in Stirling! Yikes! We didn't have it as strong as that but it's pretty scary even now when it's beginning to die down a bit!

I can see from our windows that there are fences down, tree branches broken and debris is lying about all over the place. I went out earlier to quickly pick up some things that were blowing around in our garden and one of them was a piece of paper. I opened it up to find that it was a letter to parents of pupils at one of the High Schools in town. Not the school just over the railway line from us - oh no. It was from the school which is probably over 3 miles away! Wow!!

There are roads closed all over the place because of fallen trees or blown over lorries and the Forth and Tay Road Bridges are both closed to all vehicles! There are also no trains running from Edinburgh so all those people who work in Edinburgh will have to either take an hour and a half detour to drive over the Kincardine Bridge (which is awfully close to Stirling!!) or stay in their offices overnight! Yikes again!

I'm really hoping the wind drops dramatically before bedtime. I HATE the wind but it's even worse if you're lying in your bed trying to not listen to it!

So the "from the sewing room window" photo will be delayed until the wind drops!

my pressies

First of all, thanks to all of you who wished me a happy birthday. I had a wonderful day. :o)

I took some photos of my pressies so I would remember how lucky I was am. CDs a DVD, a novel, a short story written by Joanna (LOVE IT!!), some mugs, headphones and some money. Yep, lucky, lucky old me.

A whole pile of cookery books - absolute bliss to me!

And a pair of sandals. I love them! Now, if it would only warm up enough for me to be able to wear them!

"for blog"

I found these photos in a folder on my desktop which was entitled "for blog". I'm pretty sure these are a couple of weeks old so well overdue to be posted here! Ooops! :oD

This is a blouse that I made for myself which I adore. It's so comfy that I fully intend making many more of this pattern.

And these are photos of a most amazing rainbow. I couldn't get it all into the photo no matter how far I leaned my camera out of the window!

birthday tea 2011

We had our annual birthday tea yesterday for Mum, Joanna and myself. Mum's birthday was last Thursday, Joanna's was/is today - Happy 29th Birthday, Beanie! - and mine is on Wednesday. For a few years now we've had a joint birthday afternoon tea along here where we just eat and eat and eat. Fun times!

Here's what we ate this time:

Mini scones:

Mars bar cakes and cupcakes with butter icing and pink & lilac decorations:

Thimbleanna's lemon gems and (my own made up recipe) malteser tiffin:

And here is my scone loaded with jam and skooshy cream. Oh. My. Goodness. Sooooooo good. :o)

Douglas was checking his seeds as I was taking the photo today:

Rosie came out to see what he was up to:

So he pointed me out to her:

And she clearly saw me! :o)

a few finishes

I was taking the photo of Debbie's dress off my camera just now and realised I hadn't shown the photos of my own dress and top which I made last week and the week before.

The top - best thing about it - it fits me!!

My dress -

I'll need to wear a shirt or cardi over it as my bra straps show but that's okay. I'm certainly not going bra-less. That would be like the song the girls used to sing at nursery school except it wouldn't be "ears". You know the one:

Do your ears hang low? Do they wobble to and fro?
Can you tie them in a knot? Can you tie them in a bow?
Can you throw them over your shoulder like a regimental soldier?
Do your ears hang low?

And finally Deb's dress -

I just cut this one out on Wednesday and it's all finished today - Friday! That might not be quick compared to what I used to be able to do but, considering I normally can't sew for longer than an hour at a time because it makes my back sore, finishing this dress in 2 days is a major achievement. :o)

WIP Wednesday

In case you aren't familiar with WIP, it stands for "work in progress" - or, in my case, "works in progress". I wonder if I've ever had only one work in progress? I doubt it! :oD

Here are a couple of things that I'm making at the moment.

I started this 12 point star blankie on Friday evening and it's coming along quite speedily. I think it's because I want to get to the next point or the next colour.

I found the pattern on ravelry here - rainbow ripple blanket.

And here's a dress for Debbie which I cut out and started this afternoon.

Not much to show yet but, as I've made the pattern twice already - here and here - I'm sure it'll come together fairly quickly.

from the sewing room window - 2 May

Another bright sunny day here today - but the east wind made it a bit too chilly to sit outside for long.
